How Yogi Goel Used AI to Turn Accounting Pain into Profit and Jobs

How years inside finance teams led Yogi Goel to build AI that eases burnout and unlocks healthier growth for companies.

Accounting has a reputation problem. It’s essential, it’s respected, and it’s also where ambitious companies burn out their people with month-end sprints, late-night reconciliations, and the kind of “just get it done” heroics that never make a press release.

Yogi Goel has lived that grind. After years inside finance and accounting roles at firms including EY, Citigroup, Barclays, and Rubrik, he got tired of watching smart teams spend their best hours doing brittle, manual close work. “I dealt with these problems firsthand as a senior finance executive,” he said in an EY alumni profile.

In 2024, Goel co-founded Maxima in San Mateo, California, aiming straight at enterprise accounting, a corner of business software where the stakes are high and the appetite for change is low. The timing looked good: AI was getting more capable, while businesses were demanding faster decisions without hiring an army to keep up.

Maxima stepped into the spotlight in November 2025 when it announced it had raised about $41 million from investors including Redpoint Ventures and Kleiner Perkins, and Reuters reported a post-money valuation of $143 million.

Goel’s pitch is simple to explain and hard to execute. Legacy tools, he told Reuters, were built on the assumption that humans do the work and software logs it for auditors. Maxima flips the logic: the system prepares the work, then people review and approve it.

“Agents will do the work and humans will review it.”

If you’ve ever wondered why accounting hasn’t been “disrupted” the way sales tech has, the answer is the same reason nobody wants a self-driving parachute. The work is policy-heavy, evidence-heavy, and audited. Errors don’t just break a dashboard. They can become restatements, delayed filings, and reputational damage. That’s also the opportunity: if AI can handle messy data across systems and still leave evidence behind, the close stops being a monthly emergency.

Maxima markets itself as an “agentic AI platform” for accounting, meaning software agents can prepare journals, reconcile accounts, and surface explanations for swings in the numbers before the books close. Reuters reported Goel saying the company had processed “millions of transactions” for customers without an error. The company also names customers publicly, including Scale AI, Rippling, and SpotOn.

Goel frames the point less as “AI replaces accountants” and more as “AI removes the exhausting parts.” In a statement tied to the funding news, he said, “I’ve seen too many talented accountants pushed to their limits.” It’s a theme he returns to because it’s personal, not theoretical.

In December 2025, Maxima even ran a small campaign offering massage vouchers to accountants during year-end close to spotlight burnout. In the Business Wire release announcing the initiative, Goel described the physical toll plainly: “I remember the long hours and constant back pain.”

A month later, Maxima announced another milestone that hinted at scale. In a January 2026 Business Wire release, the company said its platform had processed more than $255 billion in accounting volume across 250 million transactions since launching in late 2025. The headline number is flashy, but Goel’s explanation of the problem is more revealing.

“Accounting teams are not slow because they lack skill or discipline.”

In that same release, he argued they’re slow because preparation work is scattered across systems and compressed into month-end spikes. Maxima’s promise is to do the preparation continuously, so humans can spend their time on review, control, and judgment.

This is where Goel’s background matters. He’s not pitching accounting as an outsider who just discovered spreadsheets. He’s approaching it like a systems problem that finance teams have been patching for decades. That credibility helps when you’re selling into one of the most skeptical parts of the enterprise, where the default response to new software is “show me the controls.”

It also explains the opportunity he saw. As businesses add entities, payment methods, and global complexity, transaction volumes rise faster than teams can grow. When the close becomes smoother, leaders stop waiting for the final package to make decisions. They can price faster, invest faster, and catch problems earlier.

Those improvements don’t stay trapped in finance. They shape how companies behave in the real economy. When leadership can trust the numbers earlier, they can commit earlier: to opening a new location, buying more inventory, or keeping hiring plans on track instead of freezing everything until the close is done. That stability is what local communities feel across the country as steadier employment and healthier businesses.

Maxima itself is also an employer. Reuters reported the company had 31 people at the time of the funding announcement and planned to expand the team. Growth in companies like this creates jobs in engineering, product, sales, and customer success, plus a growing orbit of accounting and implementation specialists who can help customers roll out the platform responsibly.

Goel’s story isn’t a founder who stumbled into a market by accident. It’s the more durable kind of entrepreneurship: deep domain expertise, a clear pain point, and timing that finally makes the fix possible. Whether Maxima becomes the standard layer for enterprise accounting or simply pushes the industry forward, the bet is already forcing a useful conversation. Not replacing accountants, but giving them their time back.
